Abby was the perfect girl and although we are so incredibly sad that she left us sooner than we thought, we are so happy to be her parents. After the loss of our 18-year-old Shih Tzu Coco in 2022, we wanted to open our hearts to fostering a new pup. That is how we stumbled across Abby! Abby came to us through OneDogAtATime in Colorado. She had an unfair background, and both homes not treat her the best, which resulted in some anxiety. After hearing about her story and seeing the most adorable pictures of her, we knew we wanted to be her third and final home (her “retirement” home). We brought Abby home and after a few months of fostering her, getting her allergies figured out, and her anxiety calmed down a bit we decided to adopt her. Abby was the perfect addition to our little family and the missing piece that we truly needed in our lives. She was, and will always be, a shadow for both my partner and I. She was the kindest, most curious, brave girl we’ve ever meet. She trusted people so easily, despite her background, and was the most affectionate dog we’ve ever meet. She loved new friends, often remembering our closest friends and giving them slobbery licks and sitting on their laps. She was also a huge veggie lover with red peppers, broccoli, and apples (ohhh she loved apples) as her favorite snacks…but nothing really got her drooling quite like peanut butter for her medicine. She loved a cozy morning, sometimes sleeping in past 9 AM, and cozy evening wanting to go to bed at 8 PM max. Her favorite toy was a simple tennis ball but she also adored her latex/rubber mini pig and balls. Anything that was squeaky and round was her go-to.
Abby taught us the importance of slowing down, spending quality time with loved ones, always staying curious, and having fun.
Abby was shockingly diagnosed with a terminal cancer that impacted her back leg fairly quickly. To us, this came at such a shock since we only had her in our lives for a little under 2 years. We knew the best choice was to let her have “good days” as her last days and we are so grateful for the care and compassion of Caring Pathways to help Abby’s last day be just that…a “good day”. Her last day was filled with Christmas movies in bed, long sniffs at the dog park, sitting outside enjoying the sun, a pup-cup from River’s and Roads, and playing with her toys and snugging on the couch with us.
My partner and I would often marvel at the fact that we both grew up wanting an English Bulldog and Abby happened to fall into our lives at the perfect time.
We were and are truly lucky to have had her in our life. We will miss her with all of our heart.
We love you forever our apple-loving girl Bubba/Abby.
