Phoenix

People always say their pet is the best, and for each one of us, it is true, but Phoenix was and forever will be the best dog I have ever had.

We met her at a Petsmart adoption event. There were many dogs in crates, and all of them were barking, but there was this sweet little puppy just sitting quietly, looking around. My kids, who were young at the time, spotted her and instantly fell in love with her. We decided to take her for a little walk, and just hugging her was perfect. She didn’t bark, tug, or even get rowdy. She walked with the kids, wagging her cute little tail. Needless to say, we brought her home.

This dog continued to be a perfect little puppy. She never had an accident in the house, tore up shoes, or mistreated the cats. As time went on, this behavior continued. She protected the kids and me every day. Going on walks, we felt so safe.

She had a very goofy personality. One day, I came home from work, and here was this little dog sitting on top of our grill. Very Snoopy.

As time went on, she did show some naughty sides, but they were few and far between. She got into the trash a couple of times and dug up a sprinkler head or two. But that was the worst of it.

Every other day, she was sitting there wagging her tail, looking for love, giving the kittens love and attention, and always eager to go on a walk. She loved swimming and playing with any creature who was willing to play with her.

I don’t know how we got so lucky. Ten years of having this companion with us every day made us the luckiest people in the world.

As I wake up today, I don’t have my companion to go on a walk with. The house is empty, and our hearts are broken. We will never look for another dog because there is no way another dog will be as good as she was.

She was and forever will be the best dog in the world!
