It has taken me a while to write this, as we are still having a hard time dealing with the grief.
Our boy, Rocky, was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and fought valiantly for 358 days before we had to let him go. Dr. Tara Poyer came to our home in March of 2024 and helped us through this incredibly difficult time. She took the time to listen to our stories through our tears. She gave Rocky treats that he could enjoy with his sister, Rose, for the final time.
Dr. Tara is a thoughtful, caring, and kind person. She explained that Rose might become restless and anxious and might choose to leave the room during the process of losing her brother—her littermate—because she was unsure of what to do. Dr. Tara was not only helping our boy transition to the Rainbow Bridge but also doing everything she could to support Rose as she faced the loss of her lifelong companion.
Dr. Tara made sure we were prepared for each step of the process and never rushed us. She was so careful and gentle with Rocky. It was peaceful as he drifted off to sleep on the sofa while our hearts shattered. Even Rose came in and placed her front legs over her brother as he was leaving us. It was deeply emotional. She sniffed Rocky—his head, his nose, his mouth—and gave him a kiss. I believe we were all touched and shedding tears at that moment.
Dr. Tara was nothing but gentle, kind, and patient. She allowed us time to grieve privately after Rocky was gone before carefully removing him from our home. Once our boy was placed on the stretcher, Rose needed to come back in for her final goodbyes. She smelled Rocky’s feet and nose and gave him another kiss. Dr. Tara uncovered Rocky, allowing Rose and us to take as much time as we needed.
This thing—this last gift of love that we give to our furbabies—is devastating for us. Caring Pathways and Dr. Tara Poyer made this experience so much less stressful and incredibly peaceful. We thank you so much for the kindness you showed to us and our beloved Rocky and Rose.”
